Ghent was amazing and so much more than we expected, but we actually didn’t want to stay for too long in that part of Europe. We are planning a road trip in the Benelux is the future, so this time we wanted to stick to the plan and head to France as fast as possible. Our first stop was only a short drive away from Ghent: Lille.

The very first thing we did when we arrived in Lille was head to the closest FNAC and buy two books that proved absolutely essential during the trip: the complete guide of all camping places in France and a travel guide with 1000 different ideas of things to do in France. Lille is a cute city and we spent a couple hours just walking around but around lunch time we decided to take the road again, this time towards a little village in the northern coast where we were going to camp for the first time.

Le Crotoy was absolutely perfect. On the road we were welcomed by dozens, hundreds of seagulls flying, followed by a breathtaking view of the Baie de Somme. The beach in this village is super special, because despite it being the northern coast, the beach is actually facing south! The white sand was colored gold, as the sun was so low in the sky. We saw a little ghost crab, collected sea shells, took one million photos of everything. By sunset we realized we were starving, so we headed to a restaurant called Aux Trois Jean, where we had THE BEST mussels of my whole life (actually of both our lives, it was Jaanus’ best mussels too!). Look, I come from a coastal city too, I’ve had plenty of sea food in my life, but those little things on the Roquefort sauce where simply extraordinary!

The next day we woke up and decided to explore the camping a little. To our great surprise we discovered there were little donkeys living right behind our tent! I went over there to say ‘hello’ and the little animals came running to meet me too. They were cute, curious and very friendly and being the big animal lover I am, I took their warm reception as a sign of good luck. Jaanus says it was a sign of them being hungry and thinking I was going to feed then, but I feel my explanation is more satisfying. ;-)

At noon we found ourselves wandering around the streets of Rouen, where we had the greatest panini, and by the end of the day we were having our first picnic in french territory, celebrating my 30’s Birthday by the beach in Étretat!!! The first bottle of wine, the first baguette and the first fromages of many and many that followed during that trip. It felt very good to celebrate my birthday in a country I love, looking at the Atlantic ocean, surrounded by nature, watching the sunset with the love of my life – the best person I have ever met, someone who continuously inspires me, makes me want to be a better person and makes me laugh a helluva’ lot. Turning 30 feels good. It feels somehow “right”.

This session. Oh, this session. This is what happens when you commit to giving 110% of yourself: magic!

After I photographed Susi – a funny, light-hearted lifestyle session -, I took the subway and went to one of the places where I have been the most in Stockholm, a place I know inside and out (me and every other wedding photographer within a 200km radius): Stadshuset. The challenge was to photograph this place as if it was the first time, to see it with fresh eyes, and to deliver a session that felt radically different from Susi’s.

I decided to go a little bit more dark and moody this time. Inspired by the colours of autumn, by fashion photography and truth be told, by my model’s big eyes and great sense of style, I have no words to add about this session other than: damned, we totally ROCKED it.   #beinghumble #not

I thought I would never have the courage to finish the overwhelming task of editing all 7000 photos from our road trip to France this year… But here I am! Not that I have edited it all – I haven’t. But I have broken down the trip in smaller parts, created a calendar and committed to editing some of the images and blogging the trip every day. So yes, you and I have a date right here, every single day until New Years’ Eve!!!

Now, let’s get back on track. Last time I blogged about taking the road from Stockholm, Sweden to Groningen, Netherlands. It’s amazing like we just drove a few kilometres south (ok, a lot of km, but still!) and suddenly were in another planet. If Groningen felt alive, Ghent felt pulsating, young, free, more alive than ever. And what better way to explore this fantastic city than guided by someone who lives there and knows all the best places to go? You see, earlier this year I started mentoring a Brazilian photographer based in Belgium. The mentorship program quickly transformed into friendship and despite talking to her every day on the internet, we had actually never met in the real life (love this expression… as if there could be any type of fake life, right?!). This road trip presented us with the perfect opportunity to meet each other, and that’s how I and Jaanus ended up in Ghent: to meet my dear friend Giane Lima and her family!

I was honestly expecting to see an old and slightly boring town, but instead we discovered a lively, agitated, busy Ghent. A student city, Ghent seemed to have one thousand things going on at the same time, bars were packed with people, there were street musicians playing, people with balloons, a million bikes everywhere… I could definitely live there. We walked around for some hours, amazed at how beautiful the city is. Then we did this strategic stop at one of those little places that only locals know to try some typical Belgian shots that were absolutely delicious (like liqueur) and continued to a Food Truck Festival. Some of my very favourite images of this visit to Ghent are of this Festival – I specially love the one with the lady giving me my choripán!

German by birth, Brazilian at heart, Susi has this great, funny personality and we got along really well! It was a long time since I laughed so hard during a session! Seriously. All the images where she is a little bit more serious happened almost by chance. It was a matter of shooting fast, because I had maybe like 2 seconds before she would burst laughing again, haha :-)

I feel like this session and the one with Livia (hitting the blog this weekend!) are a super accurate representation of the type of artist I am at this point, of the type of images I want to create, of my editing style. I couldn’t be more proud of the work we created here!

This year I turned 30. Yes, that’s right. Unbelievable, isn’t it? I suddenly feel a huge pressure to take better care of the house, to moisture my skin and to eat only healthy stuff. Turning 30 is apparently some big deal and to celebrate we went doing one of the things I love the most in this little life of mine: travelling!

I worked as fast as I could, day and night, to deliver all weddings in time. The day of the trip I went to the post office to send the last usbs, packed my bags in a hurry, got my shit equipment together and packed the dog’s suitcase. FRANCE, here we come!!! For this year’s road trip we planned to drive all the way to France and back, passing the northern coast, the Atlantic coast, the borders with Spain, the Mediterranean and up through the Alps. And that’s not all. The plan was to go camping all the way!

Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014

We first drove all the way from Stockholm to southern Sweden, where we slept at a cheap B&B. The next day we hit the road again, passing through Denmark, the fast German roads (those are fasssst, just look at our speed on the image above!) and finally arriving at the Netherlands.Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014

Netherlands: windmills and cows. Oh, and sheep too.Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014

We had booked a hotel in Groningen for the night, because our plan was to get to France as fast as we could. We had never really heard of Groningen, but it’s coordinates on the map made it the perfect stop. The city itself is really cute, and we were delighted to see all things Dutch materializing right in front of us: bikes, channels, locks on a bridge, floating houses, couples in love on a little boat on one of the million channels that crosses the city, old houses falling apart but full of charm and… have I mentioned bikes?Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014

After so much stress the days leading to the trip, we definitely deserved a beer. We found this incredible pub and tried some local flavours :) Then we headed to a little bar with live jazz music. Perfect end for a really long day on the road.Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014 Travel Photography France Road Trip 2014

The next day we continued our road-trip, driving all the way to Belgium where we were going to meet a good friend of mine. On the way we passed an enormous bridge, with a lake on one side and the ocean on the other side! What an extraordinary construction – I don’t even know how to explain it otherwise… but it was truly fascinating!

I’ve wanted to do more night photography, or astrophotography as it is also known, for ages. To photograph the stars and the nebulae and even the Milky Way, the galaxy where we live. But the problem is to get a good, clear shot of the night sky you need to drive to a remote location, away from the city lights and the pollution. Such places are getting more and more rare in Europe – and in the World. As the population increases and the cities grow, the stars will be less and less visible. Maybe, one day, we won’t be able to look at the sky and think about the stars any more. They will be science-fiction objects, living in books, in old photos.

But the stars are still there, looking at us – you will see them bright and beautiful, full of mystery, if only you take the time to look up. Have you noticed how we are always doing something? Anything? How we seem to not have time anymore to simply put our chairs outside, or lay a blanket on the grass, and simply contemplate the stars? I don’t want to live like this, keeping myself busy about other people’s lives, political dramas, facebook gossip, reality shows and fiction movies… I want to be able to stop everything, take a deep breath and realize how special it is to be a tiny, insignificant human somewhere in this gigantic Universe. How many others are out there looking at us and wondering the same? (although I suspect any others out there in the space probably suffer a lot less from city lights and heavy pollution).

I was thinking about all of this, about how I wanted to take photos of the stars, but didn’t really want to travel 3 hours to northern Sweden and freeze inside a camping tent. I went to my balcony and noticed I could see some stars. How many it’s hard to say. There were two very bright and visible, and maybe 10 less visible. By doing an effort I could see something else, but their lights were so faint I couldn’t even figure if it was a star of just a delirium. I wondered if I took a photo of the stars right there, from my balcony, inside the city, surrounded by light and pollution, would I still be able to see something? Well, there you go. I’m so glad I dared to try.

I was about to start the third, but Jaanus stopped me (what would I do without him?) and reminded I would be better off sending those rolls to the lab, just to see if everything was coming out as it should…

The shots below were taken during a really foggy day in Gränö, a little island in Stockholm’s archipelago. I had my light meter with me, but decided to trust my Olympus Trip 35’s internal meter. Can you believe a camera that is 47 years old (47 freaking years old!) is capable of producing images this sharp?! And that it needs absolutely no batteries? Let the armageddon come, I am ready to document it with my battery-less camera. Totally IN LOVE with this Trip.

Another thing I had the chance of documenting with my Trip and this roll of expired Kodak Gold was a street festival called Stockholm Open Streets. It happened during several Sundays during like 2 months, and it was just amazing! There were food trucks, a DJ playing some soca music, a ping pong tennis table right in the middle of the street, some democratic Twister game and lots of happy people everywhere. On the way to this festival I still had the chance to shoot the crazy boat traffic on Lake Mälaren and Swedes sun-bathing and taking a bath at the outdoor pool of Eriksdalsbadet.Intense boat traffic on Lake Mälaren, Stockholm. Shot with a 1967 Olympus Trip 35 and a roll of Kodak Gold 200 expired in 2007/2008, developed by Carmencita Film Lab. The whole film was exposed with +1 to compensate for the age. I think it looks great!

I spent the morning figuring out what to do next. All my images from last year’s trip to Italy are still untouched, waiting to be cared for and edited. And I’m soon embarking in another long trip, this time to France. More images to edit, more videos to cut. So much to do. And all the things I want to do. Like blogging. I know it is possible to do everything I want to every day and even more. But why, then, can’t I just do it? Why do I keep creating excuses for myself?

No more excuses.

I want to start doing. Doing. Doing. I do have work to do, three more wedding films to deliver, and those are my absolute priority. I have even set goals to prize myself as soon as I accomplish those tasks. One of those goals is to finally take learning a musical instrument seriously. Another is to finally, finally, give the memories of my life the same level of care I give to the memories of my clients. I do work hard to deliver wedding images and wedding films in a timely manner. Why can’t I put aside the time to work on my personal images and films?!

No more excuses.

Writing has always come naturally to me, from an early age. When I was upset at my parents, I couldn’t always express my feelings with my voice. So I would often write letters to them letting them know how I felt. And it was like this during most of my life. I enjoyed writing letters, with real paper and real pens. I enjoyed typing on my mom’s typewriter. I had this fertile imagination and spent hours writing little short stories about worlds and characters that only existed inside my mind. And I loved reading. I moved so much, from city to city, from school to school, I never really had many friends. Books made me company, taught me about the world, about animals, about history. Now where did this all go? Where are the books? Where is the writing? I want it all back in my life.

No more excuses.

I just realized two years ago, on 25 august 2012, I shot my first wedding. It was a one and a half hour shoot, with a 5-minute city hall ceremony. My very first wedding. I had never been anyone’s second shooter and here I was, taking the responsibility of being the main shooter. I knew only partially what I was doing, but I am not ashamed of the results. It was there and then, that my life once again changed. All the fear I felt during the weeks leading up to that day, all of that was gone. I felt safe. Confident. I went home knowing I had found “my thing”. Weddings. Who would believe? I didn’t. But it makes so much sense now. What else could I even do?! This is it.

No more excuses.

Little-Bird-at-Pico-do-Arieiro-in-Madeira-Island
This little bird flew 1818m (5965 feet) to the top of Pico do Areeiro, one of Madeira’s highest peaks. It was not easy, the winds were very strong, but it made it anyway. And I too, am ready to fly even higher. No more excuses.
