Piano: "Taking Turns" by Christine Donkin

Discovering Christine Donkin earlier this year was a game changer for me. I love studying classical music and I love playing recognizable pop/rock tunes, but what I didn't know is that I truly LOVE fantasy/adventure/cinematic pieces by unknown (to me) contemporary composers.

After listening to a few of her pieces on youtube, I quickly bought her Piano Pieces Vol. I: Elementary, a collection of three books in one volume with levels ranging from prep to grade 3.

The pieces are easy enough, yet quite challenging — I'm done with the first book (Jumping in the Mud) and working through the second one (Comics & Card Tricks), and even the most basic preparatory pieces require musicality, artistry and good technique. I find them super motivating!

This content was originally published in November 2023. I'm republishing this in April 2026 and backdating to keep my piano progress posts in chronological order.
