A better blog workflow and Monthly recap notes
| 3 min read
Once again I'm considering what is the point of those monthly notes? At least when I was writing weeknotes I would force myself to sit down once a week (or two weeks, or three weeks) and write... Then I decided to create Monthly recap notes and things went downhill. Now I don't even feel like writing once a month, my blog is basically abandoned.
I must say blogging feels like a chore. As a good polymath, I have too many hobbies and they all need time. If your only hobby in this life is to write on a blog, then by all means, do sit down and write daily for 30min, 1 hour, however long you feel like.
Me, I have my piano practice, my dog, the gym, a large house to clean, a large garden to maintain, I cook lunch and dinner from scratch every day, I work, I study, and I am happily married. I love working on my sketchbook but I don't do it daily, there's no time. I love working on my photos, but there's no time. I rarely sew nowadays, because there's no time. I love hiking, baking bread, reading, gardening but... You get it. I had to choose which habits and hobbies I would engage with daily, weekly, rarely.
When people write posts saying "just blog", it bothers me a little. Because sure, I'd like to sit here for a whole hour and blog BUT if I had that much free time, I'd rather go outside, do something with my hands, work on the garden, fix something around the house, bake bread.
Back to the point, I do enjoy writing the monthly recap notes more than the weeknotes, but I'm having an issue with sharing things only once a month. For example, last month I wrote about how I decided to start counting calories, and about this cool app I found and how I also decided to go back to the gym. I wrote four bullet points. I could have just written a short post. I also wrote and shared photos of the solar eclipse in a few bullet points. WHY?! I could and should have created a post for the eclipse.
I guess there is no easy answer. I am not going to find time daily for this. I was resenting the blog because I had to do it weekly. But I DO have time on a monthly basis to work on my blog. It's just that posting only once a month is not making me happy.
In terms of workflow, I think I'll sit down for a couple hours each month to work on my monthly recap. Write the bullet points, sort the photos, then move everything into their own posts, and schedule the publications. Now that PureBlog has a built-in post scheduler, that's easy to do. The monthly recap will change format and focus on progress and lists: piano pieces I worked on, books read, movies seen etc.
That could work!
